We need to try to understand, even when we disagree

If I had one wish for the holidays, it would probably be this: I wish we could recapture some of the spirit of unity in this country that has been so sadly fragmented by political and cultural name calling. (Well, actually, my wish would be for world peace and an end to all wars, but since we’re never going to find that in a world filled with human beings …)

I confess up front that I’ve done some name calling about some public figures myself. My apologies to you all for that.

I appreciate the need for differences and the challenge of standing for what we all believe to be “truth” or “right,” as opposed to what’s untrue (“lies” even?) and “wrong.” But I fear we’re nearing a serious crisis in this country because people simply have forgotten how to understand viewpoints that differ from their own. I didn’t say ACCEPT such viewpoints — but surely in a civilized society we ought to strive to UNDERSTAND those who disagree with us, even if we don’t or can’t agree with them?

Is that not what our American democratic republic all about?

Enough for now. Your comments are always welcome, whether we agree or disagree. Now let’s get back to the more important things for this time of year, things like sharing good food and good drink, sharing holiday cheer. (Even putting on a few pounds from all that good food and drink. Unless you have some magic slim pills to ward off those evil holiday calories.)
