I quoted that part of my title directly from an Associated Press news story. Let’s see if we can guess who those “first name women” are, shall we?
How about Cher and Liz? Not many years ago, they would be instantly recognized by the public as a very successful actress/singer and a very successful actress/sex symbol: Cher and Elizabeth Taylor.
How about Britney and Paris? Most of you would know I was referring to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.
How about Oprah and Hillary, will that work for you? Of course, those were the two famous women the AP writer was talking about — Oprah Winfrey and Hilliary Clinton. Arguably, the reporter was right to use that as the teaser lead paragraph to his story about the big-time Democratic presidential campaigning going on in Iowa this weekend. But, really, why do that?
Aren’t we already weary enough of the whole looooonnnnnnnggggg campaign itself, as well as the now-time-honored-tradition of candidates parading their celebrity supporters in front of us?
Tempts me to refuse to vote for either the final Democratic or Republican presidential candidates in 2008.
Ah, well, what do I know? I’m just a guy who reads the papers.
