That ‘free money’ from the government appears to be getting nearer

Don’t whip out the checkbook or debit card just yet, but the Senate and House are getting close to agreement on the economic bailout plan that’ll get us some nice “tax rebates” — or whatever you want to call the free money that may be coming our way this spring.

Apparently, Senate Democrats wanted to add some stuff to the House-approved and presidentially pleasing version that passed earlier. But House Democrats persuaded them to back off on some of their proposals.

So now the House and Senate have to get together, come up with a finalized version, then send it to the President. I figure, assuming Bush doesn’t find a reason or way to whine about the compromise version and veto it, we’ll get the checks in the mail, oh, no later than mid-2009. Sure, that’s probably about right, given the way Washington politics work these days.

Ah, well, what do I know? I’m just a guy who reads the papers.
