We’re sitting in the middle of a winter storm where I live, with threats of ice on the way. So we stayed home from church today and I’ve spent the last couple of hours learning from the various media “talking heads” what it is I know and what I need to know.
You know the men and women I’m talking about: the various Sunday morning political/media gurus, ranging from George Stephanopolis to good old Bob Schieffer, who populate the networks — all saying pretty much about the same things to and about the same people and convincing themselves it’s all very significant.
I’m cynical, I guess, but I think the Sunday morning media mavens do as much as anything else to shape or reshape events in our world as anything else the media does. Of course, that’s all part of my total cynicism about politicians and political news in general. There may be some good, honest people in politics — BUT, I think anyone eager enough for political power to commit themselves to what it takes to win election as governor, senator, congressman, president, etc., probably has gotten past honest.
They tell us what we want them to hear in order to get elected.
That’s not a revelation, but I’m always amazed at how good the politicians are at distracting us so that we forget this simple reality of politics.
Ah, well, what do I know? I’m just a guy who reads the papers
