Can vitamins change our lives, or save the world, or revolutionize our health and well-being? I don’t know.
I’ve generally been skeptical of those who think mega-vitamin doses are the answer to total health and longevity.
I once bought a huge used book about lengthening life that focused on taking mega doses of various vitamins. The two authors claimed they were prime examples of their own methods. They looked like zombies. I trashed the book.
But — can vitamin supplements be useful and even good for us? I would suppose they can. More and more research hits the news every day about benefits from vitamin supplements which may be helpful to overall health and even treatment of specific diseases/symptoms that attack our bodies.
Is there a magic bullet vitamin that cures cancer? Can we find a hidden acne vitamin that will guarantee everyone clear, unblemished skin? Will mega doses of any vitamin regrow body parts or body systems? Is a “grow-a-new-brain” vitamin on the horizon?
I doubt it. I still remain skeptical of most mega supplement schemes. At the same time, you’d be a fool not to be sure you got good amounts of the basic requirements of vitamins and minerals, proteins, fiber, and all the rest in a well-balanced, good diet. And when you “cheat” on good nutritional and eating habits, probably a solid multivitamin every day won’t hurt anything.
