Romney displays consumate skills with double-talk right up to the end

I applaud Mitt Romney’s ability to keep up the political double talk right to the end. His announcement today that he is suspending his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination was a masterwork of saying nothing while keeping face and bowing out.

In effect, he says he is ending his presidential bid for the greater good of the country in this time of war and various other crises. He actually said this:

“If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.”

Now maybe it’s just me, but — is he saying that he can actually do MORE for the country by dropping out so that Obama or Clinton won’t get elected?? Does that make sense?

Let me try to understand this again. He was running for the presidency because he obviously thought he would be the best as president in 2008 in relation to all the others running. Does that make sense? Okay, I can follow that.

NOW — he has quit running for the presidency because that’s the best thing for the country in time of war.

What in the name of all that’s sane and sensible does that mean???

I suppose I should type all that in capital letters as well as using all the question marks, because that’s just how puzzled I am.

If you can understand this bizarre contradiction and explain it in terms I can “get,” I invite you to add your comments to this thread. Maybe my good old “liberal Democrat” perspective is blinding me to what Romney’s getting at. But if he thinks the good of his party AND THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY IN A TIME OF WAR means he must step down — then I really don’t get it.

I guess if I thought running for the presidency was the best I could do to serve my country, I certainly wouldn’t think, when I see I’m not going to win the nomination, that it would be in the country’s best interest for me to quit immediately. Otherwise, why would I have run in the first place??

Ah, well, what do I know? I’m just a guy who reads the papers.
