I guess John Edwards kept his smile intact and at least didn’t react with public anger when responding to John Kerry’s endorsement of Barack Obama. But it had to hurt. The two, you probably remember, were running mates for the presidency in 2004.
The oddest thing, I think, was the timing of Kerry’s endorsement. As others have pointed out, Kerry’s major influence is in New England, which may have been a big help for Obama in the New Hampshire primary and not so much in the upcoming South Carolina show. And at the same time, the announcement to back Obama came in Edwards’ home state: South Carolina.
Edwards handled it very gracefully:
“Our country and our party are stronger because of John’s service, and I respect his decision. When we were running against each other and on the same ticket, John and I agreed on many issues.”
So, the excitement of a presidential race brings us surprises. Oh, and then there was the really fun “interview” Steven Colbert did with Happy Huckabee. I hope you saw it, or can catch it on reruns where you live. It really was funny.
Which brings me to this: If we have such a terribly long, lame presidential “race” to face, it’s good we can have some adventure and some fun with it, isn’t it?
