Now that the hearing is over — who do you think ‘won’ in Clemens v. McNamee?

What a dog and pony show that was! I hope you got to watch some of it, just to reflect on this: Do we really pay those folks in Congress to sit around and "investigate" sports transgressions? I mean, wouldn't you think they could do something more useful with their time -- say, help the economy recover, find better health care solutions, find ways to cut taxes, find ways to help the poor, come up with ways to keep U.S. troops from being killed and mutilated in Iraq, etc.?

I'm trying to figure out exactly why a Congressional committee was holding hearings about the whole mess? I think the original idea of a Congressional investigation into drug use or misuse in professional sports -- in this case, baseball -- to be flawed from the start. What business is it of Congress to tell professional sports people they can't use performance enhancing drugs?

Isn't that sort of a case of laws and breaking laws? Isn't it more of an issue of sports "policing" themselves? Of fans and families deciding to watch these bozos or not?

You do realize, don't you, that neither Clemens nor McNamee are at risk from Congress because they did or did not do anything with drugs, right? They are at risk from today's hearing if some of the folks in Congress decide one or both of them lied to the hearing while under oath? In that case one or both would face perjury charges.

Meanwhile, nothing at all was proven or disproven today regarding Roger Clemens' use of performance enhancing drugs. But, as he pointed out in testimony, it's almost impossible to prove a negative. How is he going to "prove" he DIDN'T use such drugs? And how will this affect his reputation and/or career?

No matter that there is absolutely no "proof," Clemens' reputation will always be darkened by the whole incident. So what should he do now? I really don't know. And don't tell me he should just "tell the truth" -- unless you have proof that he HASN'T.

Ah, well, what do I know? I'm just a guy who reads the papers.
