My tile work will never rival remnants of antiquity

I was looking around the Internet using Almighty Google to research some information about tiles and how they were used in the ancient world. Made originally from baked clay, then marble, then other types of stone, tiles were used to create everything from gorgeous walls and bath decor to sturdy roofs and even aqueducts to transport water into ancient Rome.

So why was I never much good at using modern, “easy-for-do-it-yourselfers” tile squares to fix up bathroom and kitchen floors in our old house? I looked over all the instructions carefully and went step-by-step through all the tips for measuring and modifying the shapes and sizes of the tile squares to fit the floors and fit around objects like stoves, refrigerators, and toilet stools.

Maybe I need to take a different tack on all this and hire an ancient Roman … ?
