Ah, well now, let me see if I understand this. The hardcore conservatives within the Republican Party are bent out of shape because Mitt Romney, their “conservative” candidate, dropped out of the race — leaving the not-as-conservative-as-they-deem-worthy-of-their-anointing John McCain as a shoo-in for the nomination.
I’m not really tight on GOP politics, but I think what alarms the “true believers” about McCain is that he sponsored that nasty McCain-Feingold campaign reform bill, and then, HORROR OF HORRORS, he added his name to Ted Kennedy’s in sponsorship of the rejected immigration bill. Or something like that?
God forbid, in the minds of the true believer conservatives, that ANY GOP candidate should willingly be in the same room with a Kennedy, much less attach his name to one — especially Teddy Kennedy, the Head Kennedy left alive.
I think it’s really hilarious. What this country truly needs right now, in my opinion, is a healthy dose of less so-called “conservatism,” if that conservatism is the brand which forbids or hinders bipartisan cooperation to deal with our nation’s problems — problems ranging from a horrible war to a horrible economy to a horrible immigration policy.
I can’t see myself ever voting for McCain for president, but I applaud the way his candidacy may be stirring things up and loosing the grip on the Republican Party of those people like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter’s crowd. To that extent, I say hooray for McCain.
