I suppose at one time or another, every human being struggles to clear up that skin condition we call “acne.” I know personally I got lucky, it was never much of a problem for me. But acne was a big problem for a couple of close family members.
I was amazed, looking through some news sites today, to find a story released a few days ago which says winter may see a seasonal flare up of acne — and the reason the study gives is increased use of wool clothing. According to that story, “wool may trigger sebaceous glands to produce excessive sebum that result in inflammation and clogged hair follicles. Sebum mixes with bacteria and white blood cells to form plaque.”
I haven’t found a lot of detail about the original study, but it certainly sounds believable. Does that mean people who live in warmer, “wool-free” climates have a lesser incidence of acne year around? Fascinating, but I certainly don’t know the answers.
Any dermatologists and/or other physicians reading this who would like to comment and enlighten us, please do so.
