Be very cautious about plugging any USB sticks or thumb drives into your computer if you aren’t sure where it came from. That’s a pretty obvious piece of advice, I would think, but apparently some people need to be reminded. To put it in simple terms echoing childhood cautions: “Don’t put that thing in your mouth [USB port], Johnny — you don’t know where it’s been!”

Herman Cain’s handlers in his bid for the GOP presidential nomination should look at today’s comic strips and consider “The Blank Stair Campaign.” The idea came to me today after my wife and I were reading a book about William McKinley’s 1896 “Front Porch Campaign.”

Debt ceiling agreement was travesty, not real compromise

The recently passed and signed last-minute debt ceiling deal proved to be a real travesty, NOT a real compromise.

Compromise implies that both sides gain something they wanted or needed, while agreeing to give up something they wanted or needed to reach mutual agreement.

Is there any way we might sort of “side step” the presidential term limits amendment and run Bill Clinton for president again? Please?

He seems to be one of the few public figures who “gets it” about raising the national debt limit. The various brands of Republicans and/or Right Wing nuts aren’t getting it. Let me emphasize this next statement. I hate using exclamation marks, bold face, etc. But I think there’s a multitude of knee-jerk reactionaries out there in the U.S. that really, REALLY don’t understand the fundamental issue with this debt ceiling mis-debate. So here goes:

Federal budget cuts and the budget ceiling or debt ceiling are two different issues, and you’d think members of Congress would be smart enough to figure that out. But Sen. Rand Paul’s recent demand that raising the debt ceiling be tied to a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget shows he just doesn’t get it. (It’s my opinion that most conservatives don’t “get it” when it comes to a rash of governmental and political concepts, but that’s just my opinion.)

Don’t fall for the latest GOP trick to dismantle Medicare: Paul Ryan’s Medicare “plan” means nothing but bad, more expensive health care coverage for the elderly.

I urge you to read a recent “NY Times” op-ed piece explaining what the Republicans would really do and how it would virtually destroy Medicare.

It’s time for me to revisit “Christmas Past,” to borrow or misuse a phrase from Charles Dickens, and update some comments I made about the Christmas holiday season.

When I wrote that original post, I was trying to point out some of the absurdities overly zealous Christians were making about the simple choice of wishing people “Happy Holiday(s)” instead of “Merry Christmas.” I pointed out (go ahead, click and read the original post; I’ll wait for you to come back here) that the original meaning and nature of the word “holiday” came from “holy day” and could be a perfectly harmless, legitimate greeting along with “Merry Christmas.” I also pointed out that our Puritan “founding fathers,” so often pseudo-worshipped by many fundamentalist Christians and conservatives these days, actually had some pretty severe anti-Christmas laws.
