This is getting more interesting all the time: One of the newest polls done in Iowa shows Mike Huckabee waaaay ahead of Mitt Romney in the GOP race there. Which, I suggest, means Huckabee has the inside track on taking the GOP candidacy. If he continues to roll, the “evangelical vote” that has so much to do with determining the GOP candidate, will have a viable option to the designated GOP leader, Rudy Giuliani.
I really think Giuliani is in trouble here with the ascendancy of Huckabee. I recall one of my favorite columnists — Donald Kaul — saying about Giuliani that the one thing he did right as mayor of New York City was simply to be there on 9-11, because that was his job as mayor, to be there and to do what he did. For that, Kaul suggested, we’ve let him turn himself into a national hero.
Interesting race in Iowa, anyway, and maybe Huckabee is going to show the others how it’s done.
