Aside from the horrible tragedies of those wounded and killed by the crazy man at a church and a missionary center in Colorado stands the oddity of the whole story.
We initially were told that an armed security guard at the Colorado Springs mega-church shot and killed the gunman. In the latest reports, it seems she wounded the man, but he actually shot and killed himself.
You’ve probably read about the drama and craziness surrounding this story: The gunman was an intensely religious guy who had been dropped from a missionary training center a few years ago — the same missionary training center where he started his shooting rampage.
More craziness in the story: What on earth was the mega-church in Colorado Springs doing with armed security people? Am I missing something about churches? Are they really reaching the point where they staff armed security people?? For the final craziness was the bizarre “testimony” or “witness” from the armed security guard about the shooting. She said of the shots which wounded the gunman:
“It was me, the gunman and God. … I identified myself, engaged him and took him down. … I just prayed for the Holy Spirit to guide me. My hands weren’t even shaking.”
Makes me think of that old ditty that was a popular song during World War I (no, I’m not THAT old, but I’ve heard and read about it). It was titled “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.”
Yup. I guess that’s what church is all about in the mega-church world these days. Praise the Lord — and pass the ammunition.
