Calorie crusader goes after New York City fast food again

Does anybody with half a brain cell really thing there is any chance on God’s good green Earth that the calorie czars out there who take on the fast food industry are actually going to help consumers eat healthier meals?

Does anyone REALLY eat fast food with an eye on the calorie count and nutrition??

I just saw a feature on 60 Minutes about Dr. Thomas Frieden, the New York City health commissioner, who is crusading to require calorie listings on menus in fast food restaurants. He truly thinks people may make better food decisions if they see how many calories are in their burgers, sub sandwiches, fries, etc. His initial effort a regulation was struck down in the courts as being discriminatory. Apparently he has restructured it and, according to the 60 Minutes presentation, thinks it will now gain court approval if challenged.

How bizarre that is! Here’s a news flash for you, Doctor: People eat fast food because it’s 1) fast, 2) filled with tasty things like fat, sugar, salt, etc., and 2) the food and restaurants are drilled into our consumer psyche as happy, pretty, fun places filled with happy, fun people.

Never mind that the good doctor’s crusade EXCLUDES thousands of “non-chain” restaurants. Talk about a discriminatory law!

Ah, well, what do I know? I’m just a guy who reads the papers.
